The neighbourhoods of Cagliari: where to stay

Marina is the port neighbourhood: narrow lanes, seafood restaurants on every corner and lively evenings. Ideal for those who want to enjoy the city without a car. Castello is the ancient heart, perched up high: panoramic views over the whole gulf, bastions, museums and a hushed atmosphere in the evening. Stampace and Villanova are the most authentic historic quarters, full of trattorias and small artisans. Sant'Elia and Bonaria face the sea, close to the marina and Calamosca beach. Poetto is the long urban beach of white sand, loved by locals and visitors alike, with kiosks, restaurants and kitesurfing schools. What to do in Cagliari

Cagliari deserves at least three days. Climb up to Castello to see the Elephant Tower, the Tower of San Pancrazio and the cathedral of Santa Maria; stroll along the Saint Remy bastions for one of the finest views in the Mediterranean. At the National Archaeological Museum you will find the famous nuragic bronzes and the Giants of Mont'e Prama. Head down to the old port for Marina: aperitivo in Piazza Yenne and dinner in a trattoria. The San Benedetto market, one of the largest in Europe, is a must for food lovers. Spend an afternoon at Poetto to swim and eat fried fish at a kiosk. For nature: the Sella del Diavolo (an easy 1-hour walk), the Molentargius park with its pink flamingos and the Santa Gilla lagoon. For evening culture: concerts at the Teatro Lirico and summer festivals up in Castello.

The beaches of Cagliari and the surrounding area

Poetto, with its 8 km of brilliant white sand, is the longest urban beach in Europe: well-equipped kiosks, sailing schools, runners at sunset and a young, vibrant atmosphere. A 15-minute drive east: Calamosca (small and sheltered, behind the headland), Cala Fighera (wild, reached on foot), Margine Rosso and Mari Pintau (Quartu). 30–45 minutes away: Geremeas, Solanas, Cala Regina and Torre delle Stelle. An hour away: Villasimius and Costa Rei, home to the most iconic coves of south-east Sardinia.

The flavours of Cagliari

In Cagliari you eat the sea. Spaghetti with bottarga, fregula with clams, sa burrida (dogfish in a walnut sauce), Cagliari-style octopus, and sea urchins at Giorgino in season. The desserts: pardulas with ricotta, sebadas with honey, almond candelaus. The wines: Sardinian Vermentino, Cannonau and Nasco di Cagliari (an indigenous grape). To our guests we recommend the places we genuinely frequent ourselves: from the historic spots in Marina to the trattorias of Villanova, from the fish market to the kiosk on Poetto for a quick lunch.

Getting there and when to go

Cagliari-Elmas Airport (CAG) is 7 km from the centre: 15 minutes by car, 8 minutes by direct train to the central station. Direct flights from almost all of Italy and Europe. The port of Cagliari receives ferries from Civitavecchia, Naples, Palermo and Trapani. The climate is mild all year round: swimming at Poetto from May to October, cultural city breaks between October and April. The best months for the balance of climate and crowds are May, June and September.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best neighbourhood to stay in Cagliari?

For those who want to live the city: Marina (close to the port and the seafood restaurants) and Castello (the historic heart up on the hill). For those after beach and relaxation: Poetto and Quartu Sant'Elena. For those travelling for work: the Via Roma area and Stampace, close to the station.

Can you walk to Poetto beach from the centre?

It is about 4 km from the centre to Poetto. You can get there in 10 minutes by car, 25 minutes by city bus (lines PF and PQ) or 15 minutes by bike along Viale Poetto. Propertize holiday homes at Poetto are directly on the beachfront.

When is the best time to visit Cagliari?

Cagliari has a mild climate all year round. May to October for Poetto beach. April, May and September to explore the city with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. November to March for cultural city breaks at lower prices.

How do you get to Cagliari?

Cagliari-Elmas Airport (CAG) is 7 km from the centre, reachable in 15 minutes by car or by direct train in 8 minutes. The port of Cagliari handles ferries from Civitavecchia, Naples and Palermo. The railway station is right in the centre.

Do the holiday homes in Cagliari have parking?

Many of our holiday homes in Cagliari include private parking or a garage. In the historic centre (Castello and Marina) parking is typically paid on nearby streets; at Poetto and in Quartu Sant'Elena parking is always available at the properties.

Marina or Castello: which neighbourhood should you choose in Cagliari?

Choose Marina if you want evening life, seafood restaurants and to walk everywhere: it is the port neighbourhood, full of trattorias and wine bars. Choose Castello if you want panoramic views over the gulf, a historic atmosphere and quiet evenings: it is the ancient heart perched up high, with the cathedral and the bastions. The two neighbourhoods are 5 minutes apart on foot: Marina sits at the foot of the hill, Castello at the top.

Is it better to stay in Cagliari city or in Quartu Sant'Elena?

It depends on the trip. For a cultural city break or a weekend of shopping and restaurants, choose Cagliari city (Marina, Castello, Stampace, Villanova). For a family beach holiday with a car at your disposal, Quartu Sant'Elena is the better choice: houses with gardens or pools at more accessible prices, 10 minutes from the centre of Cagliari and 5 minutes from the beaches of Margine Rosso, Mari Pintau and Geremeas.

Is Cagliari a good base for exploring the south of Sardinia?

Yes, it is the best. From Cagliari you reach Villasimius (Porto Giunco, Punta Molentis) in 45 minutes, Torre dei Corsari on the Costa Verde (the dunes of Piscinas) in 1h15, Chia (to the south-west) in 1h, and the Sulcis-Iglesiente in 1h30. By car you can explore almost all of southern Sardinia using Cagliari as your base.

Is Cagliari suitable for business trips and remote working?

Yes. Cagliari has an airport with daily flights from Rome, Milan, Bologna and other European capitals, fibre internet in the centre, a lower cost of living than the big Italian cities and a mild climate all year round. Propertize holiday homes in the historic centre and in Villanova are often chosen by remote workers for weekly or monthly stays.

Cagliari is the destination with Propertize's largest portfolio: dozens of apartments, houses and villas spread across the historic centre (Marina, Castello, Stampace, Villanova), the residential districts (Sant'Elia, Bonaria), Poetto and Quartu Sant'Elena.
